Golf professional
Wright Zimmerly
A fan of the game since he was 6
Wright was born and raised in Los Alamos and has been playing golf since he was 6 years old. His father was the Head Golf Professional at the Los Alamos golf course for 20 years, and Wright was right there on the course with him. He grew up watching Dad on the job, and he took to the game from word go. His enthusiasm for golf came naturally as a child, and has turned into a lifetime’s vocation.
Golf pro, not pro golfer
Wright describes himself as a golf professional, not a professional golfer. As Wright explains it, “The difference is that pro golfers spend 100% of their time playing the game of golf, and golf pros spend 100% of their time promoting the game of golf.” To Wright, this means that he is a real proponent of the game, and is involved for the love of the sport. Wright is the Head Golf Professional at Ladera Golf Course, where he has worked for 10 years. Before that, he was with Arroyo del Oso in Albuquerque. He obtained a degree in the Professional Golf Management (PGM) program with New Mexico State in 1988, in the first year the program was offered. In this program, Wright says he had a chance to work with “some excellent people,” including some who are now famous golf teachers/professionals.
Everything about the game is great!
Wright loves all aspects of the game. He especially loves the way a game of golf helps people to relax, socialize and get to know each other. Wright says what he enjoys the most is, “you can learn so much about someone in a round of golf!”
Golf is an active yet relaxing setting that makes it more comfortable for people to socialize, even those who begin a game as strangers. Wright is pleased to note that this aspect of golf has gained recognition and grown in importance in recent years. He really enjoys the students he gets through UNM Continuing Education, and believes strongly that learning in a group can be an advantage. People are often self-conscious with individual instruction. The group setting alleviates that anxiety. He says that during the course of the class, most people make a friend or at least find a golfing companion.
Wright’s current classes may include:
