Endless directions & possibilities

Lovett works with student at cutting table“It’s just such a wonderful outlet. You can go so many different directions with it.”

Nancy has been sewing for as long as she can remember. “All the girls sewed” when she was in junior high, taking home economics because it was mandatory, and she has been sewing ever since. She has worked in the industry and shared her love of sewing with others ever since her early — and fond — experiences. From quilting, clothing, upholstery, and draperies, to working in a factory making bridal gowns, Nancy is very accomplished. She has been teaching Sewing: Beginning with UNM Continuing Education since 1990.

Individuals express their own style

“When students first come to class, all of their differences seem to go away [in their enthusiasm for sewing]. All the things that separate people disappear. Instead, everyone expresses their own style, and that comes through in their sewing.” Students come to sewing class for many different reasons; some want to save money by making home decorations or clothes, some want to create art, and some are aspiring fashion designers.

An interesting variety of people enjoying the same rewards

“When I first see each new class, I realize what a variety of people want to sew. It’s not what you think when you envision someone who sews. It’s incredibly interesting for me.”

Nancy enjoys watching students’ self esteem grow with each class. “Sewing is not that deep; it’s just fun,” is how she describes it. She is delighted to watch as her students progress and their creativity flourishes.

Nancy enjoys the variety of students in her classes. “They're all so different, yet they all have the same goal.”

Nancy loves the entire process of sewing. She knits, crochets, and quilts as well.Together with friends, she makes quilts for charity with fabric donated by the local sewing community. Their group hopes to offer some comfort to people in difficult situations.

Sewing student Curtis

Nancy describes Curtis, above, as a student who wants to “manipulate fabric” to make art. The two share the feeling of accomplishment and joy that sewing can bring.

It’s very satisfying to craft something beautiful and functional with your own two hands.
