Horseback Riding Instructor

Rose Lee

Rose Lee was born in Carlsbad and raised in Grants. She got her first horse for her 13th birthday. Her horse was boarded, and she says she practically lived at the barn. Rose now lives south of Belen with her daughter, Cassie, and her two sons, James and Jesse. She commutes to Albuquerque to work with an equine veterinarian, but her heart remains with her family, her horses, the cottonwoods and the river of her home in the bosque. Rose has been teaching with UNM Continuing Education since 1986.

Rose spends part of every busy week training horses for some of her customers. She’s becoming known for her expertise. “I can start off with a horse that doesn’t know anything, work with it for six months, and turn it into a reliable working horse. There’s nothing more rewarding than that!”

Rose Lee enjoys real affection for her horses, and has an appreciation of their gentle, honest strength and generous spirit. “Horses aren’t trying to hide anything. They aren’t trying to get anything from you. If you ask patiently, they’ll always give you what you are asking for.”

Rose says, “My class gives people confidence. It brings out their inner strength. They're learning to take control of thousand-pound animals! My students learn communication skills from this experience that help them with their families and all their relationships, even at work.”

A lot of the people Rose gets in her Continuing Education classes are fulfilling a dream. Many of them end up owning their own horses. “I like when this happens. I like to be a part of them having something honest and real in this world.”
