Dan King
Hands on Auto Repair
Daniel King was born and raised in Albuquerque, and started working on cars when he was about 15. His mother gave him an old truck, and said, “Here you go. You can drive it when it runs.” Much to her surprise and chagrin, Dan had the thing running shortly after she gave it to him. She revoked her offer, then tried to appease him with a minibike, then a go-kart, until finally giving in. Dan became a driver with his own vehicle, which is very cool at 15. So, Dan has always experienced how empowering it is to be able to keep your own vehicle in good working order.
It’s been over 30 years since Dan started repairing cars. Dan went on to earn an ASE Certification as a Master Mechanic and a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Currently, Dan is an assistant teacher at Wilson Middle School. He’s been teaching the Auto Repair course with UNM Continuing Education and helping our students for about ten years.

Dan King decided to teach a hands-on auto mechanics class because he saw so many people making poor decisions about car repairs, and often with the person they hired taking advantage of their lack of knowledge instead of helping them. He hears from some of his students years after they took his class. He is gratified to hear stories of how they maintain their own brakes or change out alternators or water pumps and save money.
Dan says, “I just want to give people the confidence to make good decisions, to look at problems as clearly as they can and to do the best they can. Even if they must decide to take their car to a mechanic, I want them to go into that situation knowing how to choose a good mechanic, and knowing how to get an agreement on the work to be done on their car.”
Under Dan King’s encouraging tutelage, students gain confidence about keeping their vehicles in good repair.
