Celebrating & growing life:
Landscape architect & instructor
Penelope Genter
“Penny,” as she is known, is an expert in her field,
and a strong and independent woman who radiates the same vibrant life energy as the plants around her.
“A lot of people don’t understand how to create a
healthy plant environment. I try to teach people how
to work with plants and their needs, and how to create a
natural environment.”
Penny has been on the New Mexico Xeriscape Council since 1994 and speaks at regional conferences to
educate professionals (and the public) on the methods of
using water responsibly. She has run successful
Landscape Architecture businesses in California and
New Mexico.
Penny works closely with the city of Albuquerque to
create policy for responsible water use. She helped
create the Albuquerque Plant List (a comprehensive
guide to what plants and trees are appropriate for
Albuquerque).
Penny Genter is a major proponent of xeriscaping or the
philosophy of using water responsibly. The word “xeriscape” is
derived from the Greek xeros, or dry. She helps educate
people how to xeriscape properly, to use water sparingly
and to plant appropriate plants and trees.
“I have a commitment to share this information with
the next generation. I get great pleasure from teaching
the insights I have learned over 30 years.”

Learn to work with nature
and it will grow on you
Penny has been teaching classes with
Continuing Education for four years. She has a knack for sharing a great deal of her
extensive knowledge of landscaping in a short time, and her class, Residential
Landscaping Design, can help you with your landscaping
projects. “I help people design yards that are low water and
low maintenance. The more you work with nature
(a given environment), the easier things become.”
“It all starts with a plan. Whether you are a do-it-yourself type, or you are working with a professional, planning is the most important thing. Landscaping is an area where your problems literally grow on you.”

The essence of life
Penny also creates flower and gem essences. She and her late husband, Gordon, decided to make their own after attending a conference in Scotland. She now runs Mountain Meadow Botanical Flower and Gem Essences and has developed 60 formulas to help restore the body’s energy for everything from stress to indigestion. Her laboratory, as she calls it, houses countless jars, bottles and tinctures filled with powerful combinations of essences. If you’re wondering whether the tinctures work, Penny says she hasn’t had a cold in 20 years. Penny shares this knowledge in another class with Continuing Education, Vibrational Remedies for the 21st Century.
“I hope to help reacquaint people with the wonderful healing energy of mother earth.”
Penny’s current classes may include:
