Kevin Caffrey

A true love for teaching and music

Caffrey plays and sings

Kevin Caffrey is an accomplished musician who shares his knowledge, skill and his love for playing music with his students. He’s a “natural” at teaching people to play the guitar. Kevin has been teaching Guitar: Beginning at UNM Continuing Education for four years. Kevin strives to give his students the tools and attitude they need to become musicians in their own right. He’s got a knack for teaching a strong practice ethic while keeping the class positive and fun. Students of all ages, skill levels and musical interests have benefited from his vast knowledge of music technique and theory.

Students learn a variety of techniques and skills: tuning, strumming, picking patterns, posture, even how to read tablature and basic sheet music.

Kevin brings years of musical experience to the classroom. His credentials include a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music with a guitar pedagogy emphasis. He taught guitar lessons while he was a college student. Then he made his living teaching guitar for 7 years after college, and also became a piano tuner. In addition, Kevin has played bass in a rock band (a “garage” band), and has produced numerous recordings of his own music. Kevin plays a variety of instruments. He truly loves to share his passion for music. “With the guitar, you can play so many different types of music, and my class allows for all types of learning.”

Years ago, a friend (another guitar instructor) called to ask if Kevin wanted to try teaching guitar at UNM Continuing Education. Kevin gave it a try. Soon, he realized how much he had missed teaching and how rewarding it was. He credits then-retiring guitar teacher Ambrose Rivera Sr., who taught with UNM Continuing Education for 20 years, for establishing the tradition and high quality of the beginning guitar class. Kevin finds value in the group setting, as he says “the students find you are in a community of learners.”

“Many students really learn a lot.”

Kevin plays and teaches on steel string and nylon string or classical guitars. Students may bring either kind of guitar to class as long as it’s in good “playable” condition.

Kevin's current classes may include:

Music, Dance & Theatre

“My love of teaching music has never waned,” says Kevin. “I am a natural guitar teacher, and teaching with Continuing Education has allowed me to revisit a part of my life I truly loved.”

“When you get 12 people in a class,” says Kevin, “ a third of the students may already have played the guitar.” Some benefit from beginning instruction, some from more advanced techniques. He gives all of his students the opportunity for “all kinds of learning.”

All of his students learn to take the guitar seriously . “If you want to progress, you have to practice,” says Kevin.
