Drawing Fundamentals Instructor

Georgina “Jean” Anderson

Jean Anderson engages that person inside of her student that dreams of making art. Jean says, “People come in here thinking that everyone else in the class knows how to draw already, and that’s just not the case.”

Jean puts people at ease. Jean helps her students release their fears; the fear of confronting their creativity in the act of drawing itself, and what’s worse, a fear of drawing in front of other people.

“To me, it’s not so much teaching people how to draw, it’s teaching them how to be motivated, to do a good job, and to raise their self-esteem. I want my students to tap into their own motivation and to have a good time. Once they do this, they don’t even realize how much they’re learning.”

Jean’s love for art started in high school, her own gifts inspired by a great high school teacher. Jean developed a Beginning Drawing class for Continuing Education that has been a favorite here since the early eighties. “I always get a positive reaction from my students. I’ve had people take my class two or three times. And they almost always go on to other art classes. It makes me feel wonderful. My students don‘t realize that I get as much out of our classes together as they do.”

Jean was only 18 when she first taught painting at a community adult center, and she enjoyed it so much, she knew this was what she wanted to do with her life. Jean went on to earn a Master’s degree in Art Education and Special Education from the State University of New York in Buffalo. Jean then taught K-6th grade in Niagara Falls, New York. During this time, she also started an arts and crafts program for high school Special Education students. Later, she travelled around the country with her ex-husband as he completed his medical schooling. They had two kids by the time they came to New Mexico. Jean first worked in New Mexico was as an assistant in his medical practice. At a crossroads in her life a few years later, Jean was ready to return to her original calling. In the early eighties, she created the opportunity to return to something she loved: teaching art with Continuing Education.
